What Are T8 LED Tube Lights?

T8 LED Tube Lights Overview

T8 LED tube light retrofit pricing can help you quickly estimate energy savings and project cost before switching from fluorescent T8s to LED. T8 LED tube lights are interior LEDs used to replace T8 Fluorescent lamps. There are three main types of T8 tube lights, with a combination style T8 LED tube available. Each LED tube option is defined by how the LED interacts with the existing fluorescent ballast. LED tube lights offer options that can use the existing fluorescent ballast or other options that can bypass the ballast completely.

A ballast regulates the flow energy to the fluorescent lamp. Fluorescent lights require an initial high voltage burst to start, with the ballast kicking in after to regulate how much power the fluorescent tube receives. LEDs use a driver to power the lamp and can come in a variety of sizes.

LED T8 tube lights have several advantages over their fluorescent counterparts.

What’s Included in Our T8 LED Tube Light Retrofit Pricing

When you request pricing, we do more than give a quick number. We help you confirm the right approach for your fixtures and your goals, then provide a clear recommendation. For a quick overview of LED energy savings and performance, see the U.S. Department of Energy Solid-State Lighting. Our pricing and analysis typically includes:

  • Suggested LED tube type based on your existing fixture
  • Recommended color temperature (3500K, 4000K, or 5000K)
  • Confirming whether your current ballast can be used or should be bypassed
  • Estimated energy savings and a simple cost comparison
  • Timeline expectations for ordering and installation

If you already have a lighting schedule or a simple count of lamps, we can price it quickly. If not, we can still help by asking a few basic questions and guiding you through what to look for. This T8 LED tube light retrofit quote is based on your fixture type, tube length, and the best install method for your building.

Plug-and-Play vs Ballast Bypass, Which One is Right?

Most T8 LED tube retrofits fall into two categories:

Plug-and-play (Type A): These tubes work with certain existing ballasts. They can be faster to install, but compatibility matters, and ballast condition affects long-term performance.

Ballast bypass (Type B): This option removes the ballast from the circuit and wires the fixture for direct power to the LED tube. It often improves reliability long-term because you eliminate ballast failure as a maintenance issue.

Not every building needs the same solution. That is why we confirm your fixture type, voltage, and ballast condition before recommending the best tube style.

Dimmable

LED tubes can come with full dimming capabilities that do not affect the lifespan of the lamp. Fluorescent lamps that have dimming options, but these are typically more expensive and perform poorly.

Works Well With Controls

As previously mentioned, fluorescent lights require an initial high energy burst to turn them on. Occupancy sensors, motion sensors, and other controls can cause fluorescent lamps to burn our faster when integrated with systems that constantly turn them on and off.
LEDs, on the other hand, can be perfectly integrated with control systems. Their lifespan is not affected by turning them on/off.

Mercury Free Lighting

Unlike fluorescent lighting, LEDs are mercury free. This makes them safer to use.

Directional Lighting

LED lights offer directional lighting which translates to light exactly where you need it. There is no light lost on reflectors or in the fixture. Fluorescent tubes on the other hand, are multi-directional. Which leads us to our next point…

Increased Efficiency

T8 LEDs are 30% more efficient, or more, than their fluorescent T8 tubes. LED tubes require less energy to power without sacrificing brightness, lose less energy to hit (more energy for lighting) and readily combine with controls systems that can regulate on and off times when not in use.

Lifespan

Our Star T8  LEDtube light has a lifespan of over 200,000 hours,  while the fluorescent tube averages about 30,000 hours.

What We Need From You to Quote Fast

To get you accurate pricing with minimal back-and-forth, send any of the following:

  • Quantity of fixtures or total T8 tubes
  • Lamp length (2 ft, 4 ft, or 8 ft)
  • Photos of one fixture with the lens removed (if possible)
  • Ceiling height and type of space (office, warehouse, retail, shop)
  • Hours per day the lights run and how many days per week
  • Your utility rate (optional, but it helps us estimate savings)

If you do not have all of this, no problem, we can still get you a number. Even a rough lamp count and a couple photos usually gets us most of the way there.

T8 LED Tube Light Retrofit FAQ

Do T8 LED tubes work in my existing fixtures?
In many cases, yes, but the best option depends on the ballast type and fixture condition.

Will an LED retrofit reduce maintenance?
Yes. LEDs typically last longer and reduce service calls, especially when ballast issues are removed from the system.

Can you help estimate ROI?
Yes. We can provide a simple cost and savings comparison based on your operating hours and utility rate.

How long does a T8 LED tube light retrofit take?
A: Many projects can be completed quickly once we confirm fixture type and material availability, timing depends on quantity and site access.
